OSELVARVERKSTADEN
BOATBUILDERS

During the 1800s the “Oselvar” was the most frequently seen wooden boat along the coast of Vestland. It is an elegant boat, with three thwarts and gently built with sleek and thin wood. It is particularly light and safe to row as well as fast on the sea with its sails raised.

A thousand years of boatbuilding traditions

OSELVARVERKSTADEN BOATBUILDERS

Oselvarverkstaden in the municipality Bjørnafjorden is probably the only remaining boatbuilders who make the Oselvar today.

The boats are made in pine, the back and front ends as well as the keel are made from oak. The Oselvar comes in several sizes, form the samllest measuring only 4,5 metres to the largest at almost 10 metres.

Oselvarverkstaden and the Oselvar-culture is included in UNESCOs list of the world’s intangible cultural heritage so we can preserve the knowledge of how it is constructed and used.
